Learn about the Paws to Read Literacy Program
The Paws to Read program provides an opportunity for children (grades Kindergarten and up) to improve their literacy skills with the assistance of Mother Lode K-9 registered canine reading companions in a fun and relaxed environment. Research with therapy animals indicates that children with low self-esteem are often more willing to interact with an animal than another person. More importantly, they are inclined to forget about their limitations. Children involved in literacy programs nationwide have:
- A marked improvement in reading skills
- Found reading more enjoyable
- Had a sense of pride in their accomplishments
- Show a willingness to become more involved in other positive activities
- Demonstrate more respect and kindness in their interactions with animals
- Consistantly check out more books from the library
Sherry Galka, of Mother Lode K-9, is thrilled with the program. She had this to say, "This is the best program ever! The children absolutely love to read to the dogs. They line up patiently awaiting their turn and they are all good readers. Great program!"
